Orlando’s Eco-friendly Eola Eyes receives national award for Design and Retail Excellence

Whether you have known Eola Eyes since our first little house on Summerlin Avenue in Thornton Park, just found us since we’ve moved to the Mills 50 Main Street, or perhaps still only know us in cyberspace, we always hope our patients see in us how much we genuinely care…for them, for the community, and for the environment. We are very proud to announce that New York-based Vision Monday, a national vision care publication, has selected us as a recipient of one of the first annual Design and Retail Excellence (D.A.R.E.) awards, the Seeing Green award, for “most daring eco-achievement.”

Eola Eyes Supports Local Artists

It’s hard to believe that we have been in our new office for six months now. It has taken some time, much like settling into a new house, and there are still items on our wish list, but the new space is beginning to feel like home! As our office renovation project was coming to completion in January 2011, we heard many comments about the fact that our office had an art gallery feel to it. We felt the same way and, in fact, our tastes had evolved – dare we say, matured – throughout the design process to the point that we wanted real art for our walls.

Are You Sun Smart For Summer?

Living in Florida, most of us are aware of the harmful effects UV light can do to our skin. However, we may not be aware of how UV light can harm our eyes. A survey by the American Optometric Association in 2009 found 1 in 3 adults were unaware of the eye health risks from sunlight. In addition only 29% of parents have their children wear sunglasses while outside. Over time, exposure to sunlight can not only damage the skin of your eyelids but also the cornea, lens, and other parts of the eye. This damage can increase your risk of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygium, and skin cancer.

Retro Eyewear is Great, Outdated Eye Exam Technology is Not

Despite the fact that fashion trends seem to cycle and you may once again be cool donning the glasses you first bought in the 1960's, other things in our world progress without looking back. Computers and medical technologies are examples of that. So, is your eye doctor still performing exams the same way he/she did in the 1960's? Not if you're a patient at Eola Eyes, but probably so at many other practices

Celebrating the Grand Opening of the New Eola Eyes

The doctors and staff of Eola Eyes, along with our patients, friends, and design-build team recently celebrated the Grand Opening of the new Mills Avenue office and, WOW, what a wonderful response! We have received so many kind comments and praise and are humbled by it all. As the finishing touches fell into place and we worked out some of the kinks of moving, we were excited to show our new digs and, more importantly, to thank our loyal and wonderful patients and the team who worked exhaustively on our renovation project. We could not have done it without each of you!

Is 3D entertainment harmful to you or your family’s eyes?

While you may feel pain from 3D movies when you see the prices at the theater box office, the only true risk to your health at a 3D movie is from your selection at the concession stand (did you know...movie theater popcorn "butter" topping actually contains no butter at all...its buttery flavor comes from a chemical called diacetyl....yummy!?!). Although some people may experience eyestrain while watching 3D movies or television, there are no damaging effects on the visual system or risks to the eye health from 3D viewing.

We are currently one of only several practices across the entire U.S. performing new product feasibility studies for one of the largest contact lens companies in the world. We, and our patients, help to advance the eye care industry by participating in the clinical research of new contact lenses and lens care products. We love the opportunity and want to share a bit of how our studies are performed, in case you are ever invited to participate.

Which eye wear frames are flexible, lightweight, and surprisingly rugged?

The patients of Eola Eyes know the answer is Oakley eyewear. Oakley eyewear frames are designed to meet the demanding needs of highly active people, not to mention being stylish, sleek and practical for everyday use. They are extremely flexible which allows the frames to absorb impact and reduces the risk of breaking.

We opened Eola Eyes and examined our very first patient on March 5, 2003 in our original location, a historic house on Summerlin Avenue in Thornton Park. We started with no significant patient or customer base to speak of, just a passion for treating patients the way we would want to be treated and providing the best in optical products. It was a slow, steady start, but even hurricanes could not stop us! After the 2004 hurricanes ransacked Downtown Orlando and much of Central Florida, including our Summerlin office, we opened in a different historic house on Jackson Street in February 2005.

Optometrist, Optician, or Ophthalmologist…What’s the difference?

We’ve been called it all, including obstetricians. No, we don’t deliver babies. We only do eyes. No blood or needles (usually) and nothing below the belt (ever). But, you still may wonder, what are the differences between the three O’s in eye care? They are all important and distinctly different professions.

Annual eye exam may detect early signs of diabetes or other diseases

Annual eye and vision examinations are important. It’s not just about your vision, but also other serious eye diseases. During a comprehensive eye exam, your eye doctor does much more than just determines your prescription for eyeglasses and/or contact lenses. While that part is important for good vision, it’s just a small component of the entire process. Additionally, at Eola Eyes, we will also assess how your eyes work together, check for common eye diseases, and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.

Eola Eyes doc participates in a panel discussion about contact lenses with industry leaders

I was honored to be invited to participate on a panel at the 2010 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Optometry in San Francisco. This meeting is one of the largest in the optometric profession, with over 5800 optometrists and vision scientists attending this year. Participating in a panel discussion about contact lenses with three other nationally recognized leaders in optometry in front of over 100 contact lens residents and educators was exciting, but learning from the brightest professionals in the industry was the real payoff. I heard firsthand about the latest research and trends in the contact lens industry and how we can continue to better serve our Eola Eyes patients.
