By Eola Eyes, Doctors of Optometry
Whether you have known Eola Eyes since our first little house on Summerlin Avenue in Thornton Park, just found us since we’ve moved to the Mills 50 Main Street, or perhaps still only know us in cyberspace, we always hope our patients see in us how much we genuinely care…for them, for the community, and for the environment. We are very proud to announce that New York-based Vision Monday, a national vision care publication, has selected us as a recipient of one of the first annual Design and Retail Excellence (D.A.R.E.) awards, the Seeing Green award, for “most daring eco-achievement.”
The Orlando eye doctors of Eola Eyes are dedicated to being responsible and eco-friendly, and it is a great honor to be recognized for these efforts. Our office, a mid-century building which was completely renovated in 2010, is ecologically friendly from the ground up, literally. The flooring is made from sustainable bamboo. The front wall of the building is lined with double pane low-e windows and solar shades interiorly to reduce energy usage. “Green” IceStone countertops are not only a design highlight, but are made from 100% recycled glass and concrete. The ceiling lights are energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs, and the acoustic “whisper wave” baffles reduce excessive noise pollution throughout the showroom. Our lighting and air conditioning systems are also both state-of-the-art.
Every step we take to grow our business is treated with respect for the environment and the Orlando community. From choices of construction materials and finishes to smaller details such as installing a bike rack, recycling containers and packaging materials, using an electronic rather than paper recall system, and changing from plastic to recycled paper shopping bags, we continually try to foster and promote an eco-conscious business model. We even recycle eyeglasses through Lions Club International. We are very grateful to Vision Monday for recognizing all of these efforts.
In addition to receiving the Seeing Green award, we also had the distinct honor of being the only retailer in the nation to be recognized by the Vision Monday judges in a second award category. We were nominated for the We the People reader’s vote award and nominees for this award were considered to be “truly exceptional Eye Care Professionals” across a variety of award categories. We thank our many loyal supporters who took the time to cast their votes for Orlando’s new Eola Eyes!
